The Pilgrim's Guide
Master the rituals of your sacred journey. Follow our step-by-step interactive instructions and authentic prophetic supplications to perform your pilgrimage with absolute certainty.
How to Perform Umrah
Umrah consists of four core pillars: The intention in the state of Ihram, Tawaf around the Kaaba, Sa'i between Safa and Marwah, and finally shaving or clipping the hair.
Ihram & Intention (Meeqaat)
Before crossing the boundary (Meeqaat), perform Ghusl (ritual bath), put on the two pieces of white cloth for men (Ihram garments), and make the formal intention to perform Umrah.
Entering Al Masjid Al Haram
Enter the Sacred Mosque with your right foot first, maintaining humility and reverence. Men should begin reciting the Talbiyah loudly, while women recite quietly.
Tawaf (Circumambulation)
Circle the Kaaba seven times counter-clockwise, beginning at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Men must bare their right shoulder (Idtiba) and walk briskly (Raml) for the first three rounds.
Maqam Ibrahim & Zamzam
After Tawaf, cover your right shoulder, proceed to Maqam Ibrahim, and pray two short Rakahs. Afterwards, drink deeply from the blessed Zamzam water and pour some over your head.
Sa'i (Safa and Marwah)
Walk seven laps between the hills of Safa and Marwah, starting at Safa and ending at Marwah. Men should jog between the green lights.
Halq or Taqsir (Haircut)
Upon completing Sa'i at Marwah, men must shave their entire head (Halq) or trim the hair evenly (Taqsir). Women gather their hair and cut a fingertip's length.
Umrah successfully completed!
All Ihram restrictions are now lifted.
The Talbiyah
How to Perform Hajj
The steps mapped below diagram Hajj al-Tamattu', the most common and recommended form of Hajj where the pilgrim performs Umrah first, exits Ihram, and re-enters Ihram for Hajj on the 8th of Dhul Hijjah.
Ihram & Journey to Mina (Tarwiyah)
Enter into the state of Ihram specifically for Hajj from your hotel in Makkah. Recite the Talbiyah extensively. Proceed to Mina (the city of tents) before Dhuhr prayer and stay overnight, performing the five daily prayers there shortened but not combined.
The Day of Arafah
After sunrise, head to the plains of Mount Arafah. This is the pinnacle of Hajj. Spend the day in intense supplication, standing in humility, and seeking forgiveness until sunset.
Muzdalifah
After sunset, travel directly to Muzdalifah without praying Maghrib at Arafah. Pray Maghrib and Isha combined in Muzdalifah. Collect pebbles (usually 49 or 70) for the stoning ritual (Rami). Rest and sleep under the open sky.
Eid, Rami, Qurbani & Halq
Return to Mina after Fajr. Stone only the largest pillar (Jamarat Al-Aqabah) with 7 pebbles. Then, the animal sacrifice (Qurbani) is performed. Finally, men shave/trim hair. You are now partially out of Ihram (First Tahallul).
Tawaf Al-Ifadah & Sa'i
Travel to Makkah to perform the obligatory Hajj Tawaf (Tawaf Al-Ifadah) around the Kaaba, followed by Sa'i. Afterwards, all Ihram restrictions are completely lifted (Second Tahallul). Return to Mina.
Ayyam at-Tashreeq & Stoning
Stay in Mina for the Days of Tashreeq. Each afternoon after Dhuhr, stone all three Jamarat (small, medium, then large) with 7 pebbles each, starting from the smallest. You may leave Mina on the 12th before sunset, or stay until the 13th.
Tawaf Al-Wida (Farewell Tawaf)
Before leaving Makkah to return to your home country, perform the final Farewell Tawaf around the Kaaba. This is the last obligatory act of Hajj.
Hajj Mabrur completed!
May Allah accept your pilgrimage.
